Abstract
1401000 Treating waste water NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 Nov 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 57063/71 Addition to 1178601 Heading C1C A plant for the biological purification of waste water comprises as a first stage, a number of compartments (two in the embodiment shown) 5, 6 provided with rotatable aerators 17, 18, in communication with compartment 4 through openings which allow the passage of solids from compartments 5, 6 to compartment 4 but prevent gas from compartment 4 passing into the compartments 5, 6, as a second stage, a number of compartments 7, 8, 9 provided with rotatable aerators 19, 20, 21 in which the sludge is prevented from settling, and as a third stage, settling tank 24. The aerators 17, 18 may comprise sets of solid or mesh discs (e.g. plastics or metal); the aerators 19, 20, 21 may comprise cages provided with agitating olades 31, which cages may be filled with plastics or metal mesh or small bodies (e.g. plastics rings or saddles). The openings may be provided with values or baffles. The bottoms of the aerating compartments may be hemispheral or may be formed from two inclined plates. Tank 24 may be divided by a partition 26. The first and second stages may comprise a number of compartments connected in parallel. In use waste water is passed from inlet 2 via compartment 4 which acts as a preliminary settler, through compartments 5-9 connected by weirs 11-14 and then to settling tank 24. The liquid from tank 24 may be filtered. The sludge from tank 24 may be returned to inlet 2.
