1400873 Grinding AMBAR INVESTMENT Inc 16 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 52974/72 Heading B3D A method for controlling a grinding process comprise mounting an energy detecting instrument other than a mechanical vibration sensitive instrument in the proximity of a contact zone between the grinding body and that workpiece material and directed at that zone such that the matter and/or energy emanating from that zone can be measured and the grinding process adjusted accordingly. The instrument may measure vibration using a seismic-type transmitter or a laser, thermionic energy, electromagnetic radiation caused by oxidation, radioactivity using a spectrometer, i.e. Geiger-Muller tube, scintillation detector, selenium cell, lead-sulphide cell or the like, or flux density. The signal produced is used to control the grinding condition, such as infeed rate, in conjunction with a dimensional control effected by contact or non-contact measuring instruments such as gauging equipment, or optical indicators, e.g. lasers and masers. The detecting instrument is mounted to be free of vibration and may be adjusted by the dimensional control instrument to compensate for wear of the grinding body.
