Abstract

1,063,789. Grinding. BROOKES (OLDBURY) Ltd. Feb. 28, 1966 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 51330/64. Heading B3D. A grinding machine, of the type described in Specification 849,638 in which a workpiece 12 is traversed past a grinding wheel 15 on a biased pivoted head 14, comprises a lightsensitive device 17 disposed adjacent the grinding wheel and arranged so that light from sparks falls on the device and means, operable by the device when the light from the sparks ceases, for applying force to the head to check and reverse the motion caused by the biasing. The pneumatic cylinder 16 for urging the grinding wheel into contact with the workpiece is double-acting; if the workpiece overruns the grinding wheel, the light-sensitive device 17 senses the cessation of sparks and causes the reverse movement of the pneumatic cylinder to raise the grinding wheel. A timing device permits the return of the grinding wheel on to the workpiece. The length of time the grinding wheel is in contact with the workpiece may be measured.
