Purifying liquids. - Water is sterilized and purified by being treated with some oxidizing agent, as by being passed through a bed containing barium manganate, or some insoluble mangani-manganate, and then brought into contact with iron filings or turnings and filtered. The water is caused to flow upwards through a conical vessel f containing the iron filings, which it enters through a pipe centering the vessel at an acute angle as shown. When large turnings are used a mechanical agitator is provided in the vessel. The barium manganate is contained in a vessel a with a porous bottom b.
