Abstract

1400749 Web formers: Non woven paper makers felt ALBANY INTERNATIONAL CORP 5 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56097/72 Headings DIN and D1R [Also in Division B5] A papermakers felt is made by lapping a carded web in a plurality of layers at an angle of 85‹-45‹ to the direction of travel of a floor apron and consolidating the web into a sheet, the edges of the sheet are then feathered and it is delivered to a second lapper where it is again lapped in a plurality of layers at an angle of 10‹-40‹ to the direction of travel of a floor apron and again consolidated into a base fabric on a carrier, which carrier is then peeled from the base fabric and a web is added to the base fabric, finally the felt is stretched lengthwise to orient the fibres in the base fabric substantially lengthwise. Apparatus for producing the felt comprises a carding engine delivering fibre web to an apron 11 and thence a primary lapper top apron 15, the primary lapper 13 operating to produce a multilayer web which passes through a consolidating means e.g. rollers 19, 20, 21 to an intermediate apron 23 from whence it travels vertically via aprons 24, 25 to a further intermediate apron 26 which delivers the web to a feed-through apron 29 and thence through an edge feathering means 32 to a second lapper 30 which is followed by a further consolidating means e.g. a pre-needling machine 37, the above mentioned apron 11 is movable to a position which by-passes the first lapper and supplies web directly to the feed-through apron 29. The fibre sheet is formed into a substrate by deposition on a scrim carrier 43, Fig 2C, in multiple layers which are needled at 46 and, When suitably consolidated, the scrim is peeled away. A web, produced in the by-pass position, is layed on the surface of the substrate and needled thereto, Fig 3, the web fibres being orientated transversely of the felt belt so formed. The belt produced by the described method and apparatus comprises a base of lapped layers of web with its fibres oriented lengthwise and consolidated by needling and to which a further web is needled, the further web fibres being oriented crosswise. The fibres may be a blend of polyamide, polyester and polypropylene fibres, the latter being fussible to allow heat setting of the belt. Proportions lengths and deniers of the component fibres are given. The belt may be bonded by resin treatment. After completion of needling the felt is washed and stretched to its proper operating tension and length in a conventional felt dryer.
