Abstract

1400471 Photo-electric analysis of x-ray pictures MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 1 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 40712/72 Heading G1A [Also in Division H3] Apparatus for automatically measuring the cardiothoracic ratio comprises means 822, Fig. 8 which may be a vidicon tube or a standard T.V. camera, for scanning an x-ray chest image 810 along a parallel raster perpendicular to the median line of the image and converting the brightness of the scan to an electrical signal, and data processing means 830 for computing the cardiothoracic ratio and for displaying or recording this value at 840 the data processing means being adapted to infer intersections between the images of boundary lines of the thorax and the heart and the raster lines, and being adapted to correct data apparently erroneous on the basis of the previously scanned points. The cardiothoracic ratio is defined as (13 + 14/15)x 100% (see Fig. 1) where 13-15 represent maximum values obtained from the scan. In Fig. 1 the lungs are shown at 12, 12' and the heart at 11. Referring again to Fig. 8 the output from the scanning means 822 is amplified at 824 and passed through a sample and hold circuit 825 to an A/D converter. The sample and hold circuit 825 and the deflection circuit 82B of the scanner are both controlled by a circuit 827 such that the raster of scanning lines of the device 822 is from top to bottom of the x-ray image, i.e. parallel to the median line of the chest and the samples are taken at a plurality of corresponding points along each scan line to thereby simulate scan lines in a perpendicular direction. The feed of x-ray film images to the optical system may be automatic and two displaced photo-cells may be employed to enable the film to be stopped in the precise position. The Specification gives details of the approach to analyzing the image and of the erroneous correction procedure but provides no details of the equipment 830 used to effect this.
