Abstract
1400457 Rear view mirrors D A STODDART and D C GOWANS 12 April 1973 [26 Jan 1972] 3621/72 Heading B7J A rear view driving mirror comprises an elongate cylindrical housing 32 adapted to be mounted on a vehicle exterior by attachment means including a bolt 78; a mirror element mounted on mounting means comprising a backing plate 76 carrying end caps 36 which engage and are rotatable relative to the end portions 34 of the housing 32, so that the mirror element and its mounting means can be angularly displaced about the longitudinal axis of the housing between a normal rest position and a fully displaced position; and control means comprising a flexible sheathed cable 70 linked to the mounting means for remote control of the mirror element position. Each end cap 36 includes a lug 40 which engages in an arcuate groove formed in the associated housing end portion 34 such that abutment of the lug against the ends of the groove defines the normal and fully displaced positions respectively, the mounting means being resiliently biased towards the normal position by a coil spring 56 acting between the housing 32 and the upper end cap 36. The lower end cap 36 carries a bobbin member 58 to which one end 72 of the inner core 68 of the cable 70 is attached, the other end of the cable core 68 extending through a hollow tube 88, which is secured to the vehicle steering column in use, for attachment to a handle 89 for manual rotation. The mirror may be used in an articulated vehicle wherein the mirror control means are linked to the trailer, so that angular displacement of the trailer relative to the tractor causes corresponding angular movement of the mirror element to retain the rear end of the trailer in view. As alternative control means to the cable 70, an hydraulically-operated piston-and-cylinder of which the cylinder is carried by the housing and the piston co-operates with the mounting means may be employed. In another form, described with reference to the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification (not shown), the elongate housing (2) is semi-circular in crosssection and carries collars (6) at either end which receive the mounting means of the mirror element, these means comprising a sleeve member (8) rotatable in the collars (6) and carrying a backing plate (14) for the mirror element.
