Abstract

1,030,277. Power-assisted steering mechanism. BURMAN & SONS Ltd., and W. H. BRIGGS. April 1, 1965 [April 6, 1964], No. 14075/64. Heading B7H. In an hydraulically-assisted steering mechanism for a motor vehicle, a valve sleeve 10 integral with a worm 12 and a cylindrical valve member 11 having splines 15 for connection with a manually operable steering spindle are coupled with provision for limited relative rotation by a frusto-conical pin 18 disposed in a bore 17 through the valve member 11 with trunnions 19 at each end extending into larger diameter holes 16 in the sleeve 10. A spring 20 provides axial loading between the valve member 10, 11 to maintain the trunnions 19 in contact with one side of the holes 16. A garter spring 24 which urges the valve member 10, 11 toward a neutral position surrounds the member 11 with its ends engaging a lug 23 on the sleeve 10 and an eccentric portion 30 on a pin 25 in the member 11. An adjusting spindle 27 locked by a nut 29 carries a spherical eccentric projection 26 whereby the pin 25 and an eccentric portion 30 thereon may be rotated to vary the neutral setting of the valve members.
