Abstract
1399472 Moulding inlaid designs G E BRANCHER 10 Aug 1973 [10 May 1972] 21914/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B6] Moulded fibre-reinforced resin articles with inlaid designs are made by screen printing a design in hardenable resin directly on to a mould surface or on to another surface from which it is transferred on to the mould surface, and applying gelcoat to cover the screen printed resin and the remainder of the mould surface to form an inlaid surface layer for the article. The design may be printed on a flat surface and covered with a release sheet during curing. The cured design is covered with gelcoat which is at least partly cured to form a sheet which is transferred to a curved mould where fibre reinforcement and further resin is applied and cured to complete the article. Transfers may also be prepared by screen printing in register two layers of resin, the latter having fibres added after printing, and then screen printing adhesive on and applying release sheets to both sides of the transfers so that they will adhere when placed in a mould. The reinforcement may be glass, nylon or carbon fibres or fabric and the printed resin may be a cellulose or epoxy based printing ink or a polyester gelcoat or lay-up resin to which pigment and a thixotropic agent has been added.
