Abstract

1399457 Programmed control of textile machines WILDT MELLOR BROMLEY Ltd 23 June 1972 [7 July 1971 24 Jan 1972 14 March 1972] 31950/71 3286/72 and 11800/72 Heading G3N A computer is programmed to control a knitting machine and also to produce a tape or other record store carrying pattern information. Pattern data is supplied to the computer from a sketch or sample using a random digitizer, and selected portions of the stored data are visually displayed to allow amendment of the computer store. In particular embodiments of the invention, the pattern data may be supplied to the computer by a scanner directly or through intermediate paper tape. A sketch or the like may be interpreted by digitizing the ends of lines of stitches, or by digitizing the outline of an area, the computer being programmed to carry out the necessary interpolation. Alternatively, an area may be digitized by repeated traverse of the area without following an outline. Details of areas including a small repeated pattern may be automatically generated by the computer in response to a control signal entered at the same time as the corresponding area is digitized. The computer store corresponding to a displayed data section may be amended using a keyboard, and the paper or magnetic tape produced and bearing the pattern information may be used to produce a polyester tape or pattern disc for use in controlling further knitting machines of any desired type.
