Abstract

1399035 Mixers K SCHLECHT 22 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 54339/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division F2] A seal for the drive shaft 4 of a concrete mixer comprises a situmng box defining a lubricating chamber 23 between two sealing rings 12, 21, and compressed air reservoir 26 in fluid communication with the chamber via a flow regulator 30. The chamber 23 is charged with grease through a nipple 22 and the air pressure within the mixer is raised during operation. When the mixer is emptied, the pressure within falls to atmospheric and a weak current of air is blown into the chamber 23 from the reservoir to blow out the chamber and force out foreign matter which may have penetrated the chamber back into the mixer. The air reservoir may be changed from the air supply to the mixer or from the mixer itself via a pipe 24. When an air accumulator is provided for cooling and reducing turbulence of the air supply the oily water collected at the bottom of the accumulator may be fed to the stuffing box; the nipple 22 could then be omitted.
