Abstract
1398970 Chroman-3-ol and derivatives ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 5 June 1972 [7 June 1971] 19242/71 Heading C2C Chroman-3-ol and derivatives thereof are produced by the oxidation of an allyl ether of formula or derivative thereof containing one or more substituents in the aromatic nucleus, with the proviso that there is at least one position ortho to the -OCH 2 -CH=CH 2 group unsubstituted, no substituent causing polymerization and/or degradation of the molecule under the conditions of the oxidation, no substituents resulting in an overall electronic withdrawal from both ortho positions and no sterically hindering group being adjacent to an ortho group when said ortho position is the only unsubstituted ortho position, by reaction with a thallium III salt in a strong acid solution. Exemplified acids are sulphuric, nitric, fluoroboric, perchloric, and trifluoroacetic acids, the thallium III salt preferably having the same anion as the acid employed. Preferable substituents in the aromatic nucleus are one of a halogen atom, or a phenyl, phenoxy, benzyl, benzyloxy, acetyl or acetoxy group, or one or two alkyl or alkoxy groups.
