Abstract
1398888 Electrostatic coating apparatus S MASUDA 15 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 42869/72 Heading H2A [Also in Division B2] In an electrostatic coating apparatus, an insulating tube 35 is arranged on the interior of a pipe 65 and is sbujected to electric fields from an electrode system such that powder particles, e.g. of paint, introduced into the upper end of the tube 35 from a hopper 66 can be directed on to the interior surface of the pipe 65 whereby to coat it. In the arrangement shown, three foil electrodes 46, 47, 48 are spirally wound on the tube 35 and are respectively coupled to terminals U, V, W of a three phase transformer 52 whereby to produce travelling fields inside tube 35; a corona discharge field is simultaneously produced in the region of an electrode 39 connected to electrode 48 by applying a large D.C. voltage across a rectifier 57 and capacitor 58 of the W phase coil. The tube 35 and pipe 65 are moved relatively during coating, heating is applied via an induction coil 67, and the movement of the particles down the tube may be assisted by charging them at 42 and by applying a gaseous pressure. Single phase electrode systems are described with reference to Figs. 6, 7 (both not shown), in the latter of which the object to be coated (65) is arranged on the inside of the tube 35. A ring shaped corona discharge electrode (87) with inwardly pointing discharge needles (39) is also employed.
