Abstract
1398494 Diglycidyl esters containing at least one cyclic imide group DR BECK & CO AG 23 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 8960/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A method for making diglycidyl esters containing at least one cyclic imide group comprises reacting a dicarboxylic acid containing at least one imide group between the carboxylic groups of the molecule with an excess of an epihalohydrin in the presence of a catalyst conventionally used in the manufacture of glycidyl esters at a temperature of greater than 20‹ C., and treating the reaction product with an aqueous alkali solution under reduced pressure whilst continuously removing any water present by azeotropic distillation, the alkali metal halide so produced and any excess epihalohydrin being removed by conventional methods. The catalyst is suitably a quaternary ammonium salt, a tertiary amine, a thioether or a sulphonium salt and the dicarboxylic acid starting material is suitably of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an aromatic, araliphatic or aliphatic radical carrying at least two carboxyl groups on adjacent carbon atoms, and R is an aromatic, araliphatic or aliphatic radical carrying one amino group and at least one further amino or carboxyl group.
