Abstract
1398327 Radiant burner and furnaces; furnace walls RESSORTS DU NORD SA 20 July 1972 [3 Aug 1971 4 April 1972] 33999/72 Headings F4B and F4T A radiant burner comprises a metal sleeve 52, Fig. 1, for supplying a combustilbe mixture and force-fitted into a body 51, 53 of a felt of refractory fibres so that it extends therethrough, said body defining a wall and having a low thermal conductivity and said sleeve 52 having an outlet on one side of said wall, a surface layer on said one side of the felt wall being vitrified when first heated to high temperature by combustion adjacent said one side of combustible mixture supplied by the sleeve and constituting a radiant non-porous thin skin. The combustible mixture is directed on to the surface of said body by a diffuser 60 on a rod 58. Radial or helical fins 62 are provided between the sleeve 52 and rod 58. Alternatively the combustible mixture may be discharged from sleeve 52 tangentially thereto by providing a helical pipe in the sleeve 52 or by disposing tangentially discharging orifices in the sleeve. The downstream surface of body 52, 53 may be parabolic or frusto-conical or planar. A plurality of such burners may be united to define a furnace chamber. Alternatively, the furnace chamber may be defined by a casing 4, Fig. 3, formed as a single unit or from a plurality of units, the or each having two or more layers 4a, 4b of the refractory felt the casing being supported by a continuous or frame-like reinforcement 1. The furnace chamber may be elongate and have a circular or other crosssection, material to be passed through the chamber passing throgh inlet and outlet openings (22), (23), Fig. 4 (not shown), or through a longitudinal slot 18. The furnace chamber may alternatively be closed in use, one wall being formed as an access door. The furnace may have one burner comprising a force-fitted metal tube 6, or a pair of diametrically opposed burners, or rows of diametrically opposed burner and/or a row of burners 28 opposite slot 18. The burners are preferbly arranged so that the whole of the inner surface of casing 4 is heated sufficiently to heat an article in the furnace chamber by radiation.
