Abstract

1398318 Automatic gain control; monopulse radar ELECTRONIQUE MARCEL DASSAULT SA 21 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 43810/72 Headings H4R and H4D An agc. for an amplifier includes a pair of P-I-N diodes associated with the amplifier which are arranged such that the attenuation in decibels introduced in the amplifier by the diodes varies linearly as a function of the output voltage of said amplifier. The invention is described as applied to a monopulse radar receiver (Fig. 1) which, as is known, comprises three amplification channels, a channel 12 for receiving a sum signal # of the signals transmitted by an associated monopulse radar antenna, and channels 9 and 10 for receiving the difference signals #X and #Y respectively corresponding to the components of the azimuther elevation # of the direction of the echo with respect to the direction of the radio axis of the radar antenna. There is coupled to the output of the I.F. amplifier 13 in one of the channels an age. arrangement which is coupled to the amplifiers 13, 43, 44 in all three channels so that their gains are varied equally in dependence on the output voltage of the one channel, thereby sensing that the gains of all three channels remain equal to one another at all times. The age. arrangement includes an amplifier filter 16 which derives a voltage u, from the I.F. amplifier output, which is proportional to the amplifier voltage output. This voltage u is used to drive two function generators 21, 22 which produce voltage outputs V, V<SP>1</SP> where V=f(u) and V<SP>1</SP>=f<SP>1</SP>(u) the forms of V and V<SP>1</SP> as a function of u being illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The voltages V, V<SP>1</SP> are then used to control current generators 28, 37 associated with P-I-N diodes connected to amplifier 13 and current generators associated with P-I-N diodes connected to amplifiers 43 and 44. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement associated with amplifier 13 which is a two stage amplifier comprising integrated circuit amplifier stages 53 and 62. The first current generator 28 driven by voltage V feeds current to P-I-N- diodes 32 and 33 connected at the inputs of respective amplifier stages 53 and 62 and current generator likewise feeds currents to P-I-N diodes 41 and 42 associated with the output circuitry of the respective stages. Identical arrangements are used for the amplifiers 43, 44. The form of the functions f(u) and f<SP>1</SP>(u) are chosen to give the required relationship between output voltage and the attenuation in decibels introduced, by taking into account the known characteristics of P-I-N diodes.
