Abstract
1398102 Welding; vacuum work-holders MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 31 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971 27 July 1972] 40417/72 Headings B3R and B3D A clamping device for securing a workpiece during a welding or machining operation comprises a clamping element connectable to a vacuum pump, a sealing ring, e.g. of rubber or plastics material located on a surface of the clamping element, and a hose disposed beneath the sealing ring, the cross-sectional shape of the hose varying in dependence upon the pressure of a fluid in the hose, the arrangement being such that, in use, vacuum produced by the pump serves to secure the workpiece against the sealing ring. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 4) clamping devices 18 are used to hold plates 11, 12 in position for welding at a welding station 15, each device 18 being provided with a sealing ring 24 having a ribbed lip portion 23 and disposed in a peripheral groove 22 so that the entire ring lies below the plane 25 of feed of the sheets 11, 12. An inflatable hose 27 underlies the sealing ring, supply of compressed air to the hose lifting the lip portion 23 into its operative work contacting position. Resilient inserts 31, e.g. of steel ensure the return of the lip portion 23 below the plane 25 of the surface of the device 18 when compressed air is released from the hose 27.
