Abstract

1398082 Dynamoelectric machine superconducting rotors NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 May 1972 [9 June 1971] 19714/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F4] In a dynamoelectric machine rotor which is rotatable on a hollow shaft 2 and comprises conductive windings 3, e.g. of NbTi, which when cooled below a certain temperature becomes superconducting and through which shaft a coolant, e.g. helium liquid or vapour, capable of reversing the windings superconducting can be introduced into the rotor, and a passage 5 in the rotor for conveying the coolant outwardly to the windings and for returning it inwardly to the shaft, the passage includes in its outward path a plurality of flow restricting channels 6 operative to restrict the outward flow of the coolant. In order that the coolant in the passage may approach and/or maintain what are stated to be isenthalpic conditions the channels 6 are of low-heat conductive material, e.g. a porous ceramic, or alternatively in order that it may approach isothermal conditions the channels are of high thermal conductivity, e.g. Cu, fine metallic tubes or a sintered block and a heat exchanger 7 is provided in the return flow. The rotor is arranged in the vacuum of an air-tight container 8 and is provided with an eddy-current/radiation shield 9; it is applicable to alternators and A.C. motors.
