Abstract

1432476 Superconducting dynamoelectric machines WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 29 May 1973 [15 June 1972] 25477/73 Heading H2A In an A.C. generator wherein a field winding structure 18 of a rotor 14 is supported within a sleeve 54 and is rendered superconductive by cryogenic liquid, e.g. helium, which is supplied at an axial inlet 22 and is extracted at an axial outlet 26, a coolant exhaust structure is incorporated into the sleeve 54 for preventing heat transfer back to the field structure 18, the exhaust structure comprising an axial conduit 72 and a plurality of thermally conductive members 78 extending between the conduit 72 and the sleeve 54. The members 78 may be spokes or discs having enlarged terminal portions 80, the members being of a material of greater conductivity, e.g. copper, than that of the conduit 72 and the sleeve 54, e.g. stainless steel. A vacuum is maintained in the confined spaces 76 of the exhaust structure in addition to that existing in the space 56 between the sleeve 54 and a copper radiation and damper shield 58, and to that between the shield 58 and a stainless steel torque tube 52/28. The torque tube functions to transmit torque to the rotor from a drive coupling 30. D.C. power is supplied to the rotor via slip rings 34, and A.C. power is extracted from a normally conducting stator winding 12 which is cooled by fluid supplied/ extracted at ports 44/45.
