Abstract

1397955 Laminates FULMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39360/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A reinforced plastics article comprises a plastics material having a reinforcing material embedded therein, the reinforcing material having a firmly adherent complete or partial outer coating comprising a metal, an alloy of two or more metals, silicon, boron and/or a ceramic material, which coating has been formed by flame or plasma spraying and is firmly adherent to the matrix. Suitable coating materials are aluminium, zinc, magnesium, alumina, silicon carbide and boron carbide. The reinforcing material may be fibrous, e.g. glass or carbon fibre and is preferably in the form of a mat, e.g. a glass fibre mat. The articles may be used as personal armour. The examples describe laminates made by conventional wet lay-up techniques from woven glass roving sheets sprayed on one face only with zinc or aluminium and a polyester resin.
