Abstract

1397952 Thread packages WINDINGS Inc 23 May 1972 24145/72 Heading B8M A hollow package of flexible material comprises layers of coils, each coil forming at least one figure 8, the cross-overs of successive coils in each layer progressing through an angle of less than 360 degrees about the package axis and being arranged to leave a radial opening in the package. The cross-overs in one layer are spaced differently from the cross-overs in the next layer. A layer of the package is wound by traversing the material on to a rotating spindle, the number of traverses being less in a given time than an exact multiple of one half the number of spindle rotations to cause the crossovers to progress. Before the cross-overs have progressed through 360 degrees, the winding is changed so that the number of traverses is greater than the exact multiple, this causing the cross-overs to progress in the opposite direction to form the next layer. The difference between the exact multiple and the number of traverses in the two layers is different, to produce the different spacing of the cross-overs in the two layers.
