Abstract

1397444 Seaming; making helically wound tubing L WESTERBARKEY 2 June 1972 [4 June 1971] 25963/72 Headings B3A and B3J [Also in Division F2] A flexible, helically corrugated pipe (Fig. 9), comprises two layers, each layer being made from a respective strip of sheet material by helical winding, wherein the edges of the strip forming the inner layer are folded together, and the edges of the strip forming the outer layer are situated between each pair of folds of the inner layer and are folded into a button or mushroom shaped fold which incorporates a corrugation of the inner pipe. As shown (Fig. 1a), a first strip 3 of corrugated material is fed on to a mandrel 1 which rotates in the direction of arrow A, and the overlapping edges are progressively deformed into a fold by rollers 2, 4, 5. The inner tube passes off the mandrel 1 and is surrounded by a helically wound corrugated strip 8 such that the overlap of the edges of strip 8 lies between the folded seams of the inner pipe. A pair of co-operating rollers 6, 7 fold the overlapped edges of strip 8 and the incorporated corrugation of the innertube to a mushroom or button shape (Fig. 8). The pipe may be of metal (e.g. high grade steel) or plastics material. It is stated that the pipe thus produced combines strength, flexibility, and fluid tightness.
