Abstract

1397321 Upgrading scrap SLAGMET A G 28 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55711/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division B2] Metal bearing scrap is upgraded by subjecting to power hammering to separate the relatively metal free slag fraction from the metal fraction and removing the relatively metal free fraction from the upgraded metal fraction. The scrap 11 may comprise ferrous pan bottoms, large splashings, plates or skulls of 0À1 to 10 tons and may be subjected to 150 to 450 blows per minute using pneumatic or hydraulic hammers while resting on the soiled centre region 3 of a hammer platform which has retaining walls 5 and is partially in grid form 4 to allow the relatively metal free fraction and small metal pieces separated off to fall therethrough on to conveyer 7 which transports them to magnetic separator 8 in which the relatively metal free fraction 13 is separated from the small pieces of metal 12 which may be agglomerated and charged to a blast furnace, the remaining upgraded scrap on the hammer platform containing over 90% metal being suitable for immediate furnace use.
