Abstract

1397164 Liquid-film heat exchangers BAYER AG 31 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 41011/73 Heading F4S A device for bringing the temperature of a liquid (e.g. a silicone oil) to a desired value consists of a cylindrical hollow body 4 of metal, within which is a heating or cooling system and over the outer surface of which flows a film of the liquid being heated to cooled, from a feed pipe 2, means being provided to sense the temperature of the liquid film as it leaves the surface of the hollow body and to adjust accordingly the heating or cooling system within the body. As shown, the attemperated liquid flows into a trough 6 from which it passes via a spout 7 to a collecting pipe 8. A sensor 13 in the trough 6 detects any required change in the liquid temperature and acts through a controller 14 to change the wall surface temperature of the body 4. This may be done by varying either the throughflow rate or temperature of the tempering liquid entering the hollow body through a pipe 10. The heating or cooling system within the body 4 can comprise a tube coil; or electric heating may be used. Means for distributing the liquid over the surface of the body 4 may comprise a conical end surface 3, or a scraper (12, Fig. 3) rotating over a flat end surface. The body outer surface may be roughened to assist heat transfer.
