Abstract
1397131 Switch contacts PLESSEY CO Ltd 21 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30461/72 Heading H1N [Also in Divisions B2 and C7] An electrical contact material which has improved arc-erosion characteristics and is especially suited for contacts used in switching capacitive loads consists of a high electronic work function material which is one or more of the precious metals gold, palladium, ruthenium, platinum, rhodium or rhenium, or a silverpalladium alloy, together with up to 3 wt. per cent of a low electronic work function material which is lithium, potassium, rubidium, ceasium, barium, cadmium sulphide or sodium chloride, the latter materials may be distributed uniformly throughout the former, or may be at discrete sites on the surface of the former. In examples a mixture of gold and potassium, together with nickel as a hardener, is electrodeposited on to a nickel-iron substrate to form a layer in which potassium is distributed in the gold; in a further embodiment, this material is then boiled in saturated salt solution to provide a layer of sodium chloride crystals over the goldpotassium deposit.
