Abstract

1397084 Variable displacement pump and motor control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 7 June 1972 [12 June 1971] 27667/71 Heading G3P [Also in Division F2] The displacement of a pump or motor in a hydrostatic transmission is controlled by a piston 14 subjected at its right-hand side to the pump output pressure, as transmitted by selector valve 16, and at its left-hand side to a servo pressure established by spool 20 which can connect the left-hand side to exhaust via 30, 29, 31, 28, 32 or to the right-hand side via 30, 29, 27, the piston tending to follow-up displacement of the spool. A sleeve 34 on the spool coacts with the ends of chamber 35 to limit relative displacement of the spool, and also serves to connect the spool to plunger 36, 38 which is biased against stop 44 by spring 43 acting on a seat 42 engaging abutment 41 on the plunger. The plunger extends with clearance through the seat 42 and is urged rightwards by a control pressure admitted at 46 or 47 to chamber 37, the latter having an optional bleed 50. Bores 39, 40 in the plunger maintain a pressure balance across the seat 42. In the arrangement shown, plunger 36, 38 has an overall length such that when it abuts stop 44 the piston 14 assumes a zero-stroke position. Such an arrangement may be used in allowing control of a pump in a hydrostatic transmission in response to an external control pressure admitted at 46 or 47, or in allowing control of a motor in a transmission in response to motor outlet pressure admitted at 46 or 47. In the latter case, the effective diameter of plunger 36, 38 and the rate of spring 43 may be chosen to maintain the power output (pressure x stroke) of the motor constant. In a modified arrangement, the overall length of plunger 36, 38 is reduced so that when it abuts stop 44 the piston 14 assumes a maximum stroke position. In this case an external control pressure is admitted at 46 or 47 to allow control of a motor in a hydrostatic transmission, or a pump output pressure is admitted at 46 or 47 to allow pump output power to remain constant.
