Abstract

1396692 Linear motors UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTH WALES 11 May 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 4483/71 Heading H2A A linear electric motor comprises fixed and moving cylindrical members 1, 3, one of which (1) carries a winding 5 which produces a field, permeating the other member, in a direction perpendicular to the axes of the members, the magnetic circuit of one of the members ineluding a first, helical, rib 7 which projects towards a second rib or ribs 9 on the other member. On energization of the winding the members 1, 3 will move axially relative to each other to a position in which the points at which the first and second ribs are closest lie along the axis of the magnetic field. Rotation of the field either continuously (using a three-phase winding) or in steps, will then cause further movement. The second rib(s) 9 may be either spaced annuli or a further helix. The members comprise laminated steel or ferrite.
