Abstract
1396659 Nuclear reactors SIEMENS AG 23 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 9130/73 Heading G6C In a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, the wall 3 of the concrete pressure vessel carries a gastight, flame proof and explosion proof lining 15 bounding the reactor chamber, the reactor core, provided in the chamber, is surrounded by a shield 6 which absorbs radiation from the core, and a layer 17 of thermal insulation which inhibits the flow of heat from the core to the boundary of the chamber is spaced from the lining 15 to permit inspection of the latter. In one embodiment (Fig. 2), the space between the lining 15 and layer 17 is used to conduct a flow 12 of cool gas. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), a coolant flows in piping 18 between the liner 15 and wall 3. The shield 6 may comprise blocks, bars or balls of radiation absorbent material and cooling gas flows through it in parallel with the core. The shield 6 has a lining 16 facing the core. The thermal insulation 17 may be supported on the shield 6 by protuberances or projections. The reactor is a breeder reactor and operates to supply heat in a closed circuit to a steam generator (5) (Fig. 1, not shown), in the pressure vessel.
