Abstract

1396614 Photo-electric navigational aid; route progress indicators J F EDWARDS 4 May 1973 [10 May 1972] 21785/72 Headings G1A and G1K A navigational aid apparatus for a driver of a motor vehicle comprises a nine-bit scaling counter ICX, IC12, IC2-8 which receives input pulses produced by photo-cell P1, apertured wheel 11 connected to the vehicle speedometer cable, and lamp LP1, the counter supplying output pulses representing one tenth of a mile travelled to the input of a further counter IC17-23 forming a distance register which resets at every 128th input pulse and which is provided with means to enable the further counter to be set selectively to the complement from 128 of a required number of pulses. Thus a tape recorded speech signal to be broadcast to the driver after one mile travelled is initiated by receipt of 118 2KHz pulses recorded on another channel of the tape in the further counter plus ten pulses from the output of the scaling counter. The scaling counter is inhibited (at the 1 and 13 pins of ICX) while the complementary number of pulses is loaded into the distance register. When the distance register reaches zero the tape motor is started by IC11 and the speech is broadcast. A calibrate button when pushed earths pins 9 of the distance register ICs and sets the register to 127 leaving 1/10mile to go before the next instruction. Therefore the previous verbal instruction would have told the driver to calibrate at a given landmark en-route. (For Figures see next page)
