Abstract

1396217 Defluorinating phosphoric acid HOECHST AG 3 May 1973 [4 May 1972] 21079/73 Heading C1A Wet-process phosphoric acid containing 25- 35% by wt. P 2 O 5 and 0À3-2À0% by wt. F is defluorinated by agitating a mixture of the acid with (a) granular calcium metasilicate in an amount 0À2-2 times the amount of F present in the acid, and(b) a soluble Na compound, e.g. NaOH, at a temp. of 30-80‹ C., then allowing the resultant mixture to stand for 10-120 mins. and then separating the precipitated F values. A polymethacrylate flocculating agent may be added to the agitated mixture in an amount of 0À5-2 g./m,<SP>3</SP> of acid. The calcium metasilicate may be the rapidly cooled slag from an electrothermal phosphorus or thermal reduction furnace. The precipitate may be allowed to settle and the clear supernatent liquor separated from the sludge which is recycled to the wet-process, optionally after being placed on a filter used for separating CaSO 4 from processed phosphate ore. The precipitate may alternatively be separated on a vacuum or pressure filter.
