Abstract
1396134 Thermal insulation CARBORUNDUM CO 14 Aug 1972 [23 Aug 1971] 37762/72 Heading F2X [Also in Division F4] A furnace shell 10 has a plurality of studs 12 welded to it at suitably spaced locations, each stud projecting into the furnace interior and penetrating an insulating lining comprising, e.g. a layer 20 of mineral wool and a layer 22 of aluminium silicate fibres. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), the end of the stud is threaded to engage the threads of a holding nut 16 which is tightened against a washer 18. The stud 12, holding nut 16 and washer 18 are formed of carbon steel or alloy steel. In order to protect the hot end of the stud 12, a cup-shaped refractory protector 24 is provided between the outer insulating layer 22 and the washer 18. The protector 24 may be formed by pressing or vacuum casting a composition comprising suitable refractory fibres, such a aluminium silicate, with appropriate binders and firing the resulting shape. After the holding nut 16 has been tightened, the protector 24 is filled with a suitable castable refractory mixture 28. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), a refractory cap in which a threaded metallic insert is firmly bonded is screwed on to the end of the stud, the cap being of sinusoidal shape to facilitate the tightening operation. In a third embodiment (Fig. 5), the stud 12 is not threaded but has radial slots cut near its outer extremity. A retaining metallic washer 44 has a centre keyhole opening which permits it to fit over the end of stud 12 and snap into one of the slots 42, thus holding the refractory protector 24 and the insulating layers 20, 22 in place. The exposed stud end and the washer 44 are covered by a second refractory protector 48. Both refractory protectors 24, 48 are made from the same type of refractory composition, the protector 48 being shaped for a force fit when inserted within the inturned rim of protector 24.
