Abstract

1,224,175. Heat storage apparatus. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. 4 Oct., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 46142/67. Addition to 1,034,929. Heading F4U. Heat storage apparatus comprises, in conjunction with heating means, composite members each having an inner portion of an ironphosphorus alloy containing from. 2 to 30% phosphorus, and an outer portion consisting of a fired refractory material stable at a temperature in excess of 500‹ C. The preferred phosphorus content is from 6 to 10% and preferred refractory materials, are listed. As shown, the inner portion 11 and the refractory surround 12 are themselves surrounded by thermal and electrical insulation 13, e.g. glass wool within a steel canister 14. An insulated electric heating coil 15 is wound around the canister. Alternatively (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) the insulation 13 and canister are omitted and the heating element is located in a channel formed in an outer face of the refractory surround. The iron-phorous alloy may be poured into the surround in the molten state and allowed to solidify or may be pre-cast or machined to the desired shape. The surround may be lined with a releasing agent, e.g. carbon black, or thermal insulation, e.g. asbestos or dicalcium silicate before insertion of the alloy. The composite members may be mounted in a casing having air inlets and outlets and a fan.
