Abstract

1395986 Generating combustion products under pressure; gas turbine plant ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICAL CORP 20 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 34071/72 Addition to 1395422 Headings F1G and F1L In a modification of the method of adiabatically oxidizing a carbonaceous fuel described in Specification 22494/72 the fuel/air mixture is passed through a zone containing an oxidation catalyst at a temperature of between about 1500 and 3000‹F where partial oxidation occurs and then through a non-catalytic zone where further oxidation occurs at a temperature of between about 1500 and 3000‹F. The volume ratio of free oxygen to fuel in the mixture is at least 1.1, e.g. at least 2, times the stoichiometric amount required for complete combustion. The amount of catalyst is less than half, e.g. 0.02 or 0.01, the amount needed to completely oxidize the fuel to carbon dioxide and water, the volume of the catalytic zone being less than the non-catalytic zone. The fuels, catalysts and plant operation are in other respects generally as specified in the parent Specification. In one application to a gas turbine plant having a compressor 12 and turbine 14 the oxidation reaction is carried out in a chamber 30 having a first catalytic zone 31, a non-catalytic combustion zone 32 and a second catalytic zone 33 of greater volume than zone 31. In a modification Fig.2 (not shown) zone 33 is disposed between turbine 14 and a separate power turbine 51 so as to effect inter-stage re-heating. Cooling air may be added between chamber 30 and turbine 14 and the air and fuel may be pre-heated prior to entering chamber 30.
