Abstract

1395722 Conveying and orientating articles; orientating containers for packaging MARDON SON & HALL Ltd 18 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 45711/71 Headings B8A and B8C A ferromagnetic container 20 has a reflective strip or reference mark 22 which is used to orientate the container while being carried by a conveyer 10. A block 29 alongside the conveyer houses a strip light 31 and a sensor consisting of a series of photo-cells 30a-30d, together with an electromagnet 34. A series of electromagnets 36 is provided beneath the conveyer and the magnets 34, 36 are controlled by the photo-cells 30 through a logic-memory circuit 35. In operation, the circuit maintains the electromagnet 34 switched on so long as no signal is received from any of the photo-cells 30. These are energized only when the reflective strip 22 of the container is facing the block 29, i.e. the container is correctly orientated. With the container in position 20a, or 20b, and its strip indicated at 21, the container will be attracted by the magnet 34 to wall 12 of the block 29 and will be rotated thereby until it moves to position 20c: the magnet 34 is then de-energized and remains so until the container passes a photo-cell 32 which causes the magnet to be re-energized to orientate the next container. If this happens to be correctly orientated the photo-cell 30a causes the magnet to be deenergized and the container is not rotated. The magnets 36 are energized when the magnet 34 is switched off and prevent rotation of the container. For sensing the orientation mechanical or electrical means may be used in place of the photo-cells. As an alternative, the circuitry can be arranged so that a photo-electric cell or other device only produces a signal when it does not sense the reference mark on the container, and rotation of the latter depends on the presence of the signal. Containers of polygonal cross-section are specified and packaging of containers is referred to.
