Abstract
1395468 Lining a container NIPPON STEEL CORP 23 Aug 1973 [26 Aug 1972 2 Sept 1972 16 Dec 1972] 39993/73 Heading B5A A refractory lining in a container for molten metal is produced or repaired from refractory material having a water content so adjusted that it has a thixotropy such that on vibration, it becomes fluidized so as to flow from the bottom of a moulding box inside the container and fill the gap between the moulding box and the container. As shown in Fig. 1, a container 1 has a lining 2 to be repaired. A moulding box 3 is placed inside the container so as to form a gap 4 between the box 3 and lining 2. A sealable vessel 7 is mounted in box 3, vibrated by machines 8, and is preferably connected to box 3 for transmitting vibration thereto. Vessel 7 may be connected via pipe 11 to a pressure reduction device (not shown), to accelerate degassing and via pipe 12 to a pressurizing device (not shown), for improving flow through outlet 13. Box 3 is held by trunnions 24 with cotter pins 31 on supports 26 mounted on a base 25 in a pit 27. Box 3 is movable in the horizontal plane in one direction by cylinders 40 and in a perpendicular direction by cylinders (41, Fig. 3, not shown), by means of grooves and ridges 36, 37 and (38, 39) in bases 33, 34. A further base 35 on which bases 33, 34 are mounted is vertically movable by cylinders 42. The valve means 13<SP>1</SP> to open and close outlet 13 may comprise a pneumatically expansible member (14, Fig. 4, not shown), to close the outlet 13 or a slide valve (17, Fig. 5, not shown), operated by wire and pulley mechanism (20-23). In operation, refractory material is sealed in vessel 7 and vibrated by machines 8 while under reduced pressure. When the desired fluidity is reached, the pressure reduction is stopped, outlet 13 opened and the material pressurized via pipe 12 so that it flows into gap 4. On ceasing vibration, the material solidifies and the moulding box is removed.
