Abstract

1395260 Operating I C engines SIEMENS AG 12 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 32674/72 Heading F1B In a method of operating an I. C. engine using a catalyst for cracking a fuel containing carbon and hydrogen to produce a gas or vapour which is supplied with oxygen containing gas to engine 2, fuel mixed with a sub-stoichiometric quantity of oxygen containing gas is ignited and passed over the catalyst to the engine and when the catalyst starting temperature is reached the oxygen/fuel ratio upstream of the catalyst is reduced. When or after the reforming temperature for a fuel/exhaust gas mixture is reached, part of the oxygen containing gas and fuel are replaced with exhaust gas and the mixture supplied to the catalyst is heated by heat exchange with the exhaust gas and/or the mixture downstream of the catalyst. Air and fuel are mixed in fuel metering device 14 and fed via heat exchangers 9 and 8 to porous bricks 5 carrying catalyst and the cracking product passes via heat exchanger 9 and is mixed with secondary air admitted through valve 13 before going through throttle valve 11 to the I. C. engine 2. The engine exhaust gas passes via pipes 22, 21 and heat exchanger 8 to exhaust outlet 23, which may be provided with means to afford flow resistance and cause sound damping. After the reforming temperature is reached, valve 19 is opened and some exhaust gas is passed to the fuel metering device 14 via pipe-line 18. During warming up an ignition device 7 operates but when the catalyst has reached its starting temperature as detected by temperature sensing means 6, the device 7 is no longer used. A control and regulating device 24 responds to catalyst temperature and the setting of throttle valve 11 to operate regulators 25 by way of lines 26 and thus control the flows of fuel, primary and secondary air, mixture and exhaust gas recirculation. The highly porous sintered bricks 5 are constructed with a plurality of parallel gas ducts.
