Abstract

1395231 Railway ballast excavating machines FRANZ PLASSER BAHNBAUMASCHINEN - INDUSTRIE GESELLSCHAFT mbH 24 May 1972 [24 May 1971] 24463/72 Heading E1G A railway ballast excavator 5 working beneath a track 4 held raised by lifting tools 7 on the excavator is vertically adjusted to control the depth of excavation by an automatic control system comprising a reference line, shown as a track-side reference wire 18a, cooperating with a sensor 28 on the excavator, means 30 being provided for manual override. As shown the excavator 5, on a rail-mounted chassis 3, comprises an endless chain 5a guided in a pivotally adjustable inclined plane along a triangular path having a horizontal run under the raised track 4, and feeds ballast to a multiple-shelf cleaning screen 9 associated with conveyers 11, 12, 13, a chute 14 and a regulator plough 8 for levelling the cleaned, relaid ballast. The excavator 5 is raised and lowered about its upper apex by hydraulic cylinders 16 controlled by an electromagnetic valve 19 actuated by a rotary potentiometer 27 whose spindle carries a forked or other sensor arm 28 engaging the wire 18a. The potentiometer can itself be raised and lowered by a handle 30 on a screwed spindle 29 to provide manual override control of the cutting depth-e.g. at bridges, or for heavily encrusted ballast. The spindle 29 is mounted in a threaded sleeve 31 carried by an arm 43 on the excavator. The amount of manual override can be observed on a scale 32. The cutting depth can be observed on instruments 33, 34 controlled by the potentiometer 27. To provide automatic "superelevation" adjustment of the inclination to the horizontal of the cutting chain 5a the cylinders 16 are differentially controlled through the valve 19 by an electrical subtraction unit 45 responsive to an input from an adjusting unit 46 (on which the required superelevation is set) and an input 44 from a potentiometer actuated by a cross-level pendulum 37. The potentiometer 36 also controls a motor 41 which through screw and nut gearing 42 raises and lowers the arm 43 carrying the threaded sleeve 31 of the screw spindle 29.
