Abstract

1395075 Position encoders R J P JONES 10 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41678/72 Heading G4H The position of a linear or angularly movable member is digitized using a linear or circular array of e.g. 16 switches, preferably magnetic reed switches, and a switch actuating member, e.g. a permanent magnet, coupled for movement with the first member, the outputs of the switches being connected to a diode matrix adapted to produce a 4-bit Gray coded word indicative of each discrete position of the movable member. In a first embodiment, 16 coded outputs may be produced from 16 switches equispaced in a circle excepting a gap equivalent to two switches around the reference position of the member, discrete positions being defined as those points mid-way between two switches, these two switches both being closed when the member is in the discrete position. In a second embodiment, 16 words are derived from 11 switches which are unequally spaced, some being more sensitive and at a slightly smaller distance from the axis of rotation of the actuating member. The movable member is preferably either a liquid level sensing float or a weather or current vane.
