Abstract
1394819 Welding by pressure INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd and BRITISH GAS CORP 28 April 1972 [3 May 1971] 12728/71 Heading B3R In welding tubular metal members 1, 2 which have their ends abutting a charge of explosive 9 is positioned within a metal sheath 6 and is placed inside the members adjacent the ends, the members are surrounded by an external metal sleeve 3 and the charge is fired to weld the members to the external sleeve 3. In an embodiment the members which may be natural gas pipes are surrounded by a sleeve 3 having an annular recess 4 parallel to the pipes and the sheath 6, e.g. of stainless steel, which serves to seal the weld area from gaseous products, forms part of a package comprising the sheath 6, end plugs 7, 8, charge 9 and detonator 10. located within the pipes. The pipes are abraded externally prior to welding. After welding of the pipes to the sleeve 3 the sheath 6 remains expanded in position. In a modification the recess 4 is tapered. Alternatively the outer sleeve may be a thin tube having inwardly bent end portions and surrounded by a removable support.
