Abstract

1394815 Measuring resistance GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 9 June 1972 58453/70 Heading G1U [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] An insulation tester employs a DC-DC converter having automatic current limitation (see Division H2). As described, an oscillator comprising transistor 6 and transformer 1 is supplied from a 1-3 volt battery at terminals 5, 7, the output of the oscillator being rectified at 11 to provide 550V between terminals 12 and 13. This voltage is supplied to an insulation measuring circuit comprising a moving-coil meter 45 calibrated in megohms and feeding test terminals 46, 13. The voltage across terminals 12, 13 is stabilized for currents corresponding to insulating resistance greater than 0.5 megohms by action of components 34, 24, 22, 17. The scale at the low resistance end is arranged to be cramped by means of a current limiting circuit in which the output current is monitored by resistors 35, 36 and fed a diode 37 so as to reduce the output voltage under these conditions. Capacitor 39 prevents damage to the circuit if the test terminals 46, 13 are inadvertently connected to the mains supply. Lower resistance ranges are obtained by using lower voltages across terminals 7, 21 and 7, 42. Alternatively a floating circuit may be provided by rectifying the output of a floating winding (not shown).
