Abstract

1394681 Resin-fibre structure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD 28 March 1972 [6 April 1971] 8818/71 Heading D1R [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] In an electrode for supporting pastes used in primary or secondary cells, or for use in electrochemical processes, having at least a surface portion which consists of electrically conductive fibrous material in a polymer matrix, conductive fibres project from its surface. The bulk portion of the electrode may be of the same material as the surface portion or may be any shapable conductive or non- conductive material. The fibrous material may be metal; or metal-coated glass, silica, or asbestos. The polymer may be a thermoplastic, rubber, or a cured composition. In one embodiment the fibre/polymer composition is moulded and the surface of the body selectively abraded by, for example, sandblasting to expose the fibres. Three other embodiments use a felted mat or tangled mass of fibre. In one, lead-coated glass fibres are matted with a small quantity of PVC and the mat immersed in methylmethacrylate; the impregnated mat is removed and polymerised at 56‹C for 1 hour and 90‹C for 4 hours. The body may be formed against a ribbed surface. In a variant, the surface of the mat is scuffed before immersion in the methacrylate. In the third example, a mat of lead-coated glass fibres is laid on a flat surface at the bottom of a mould and a polyester-forming composition is poured in so that it rises to just short of the top surface of the mat, the composiion then being allowed to solidify. These electrodes may support a lead/lead-oxide pastes for lead-acid secondary cells.
