Abstract

1394678 Casting machines BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 5 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 35911/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] A casting machine comprises a first nozzle or nozzles 4 capable of oscillating horizontally and being fed by two or more liquid reservoirs 1, a first inclined trough 10 disposed below the nozzle(s) 4, means for collecting the liquid from trough 10 and for feeding a second horizontally oscillating nozzle or nozzles 16 and a second trough 20 disposed below the nozzle(s) 16 for feeding a mould. The collecting and feeding means may comprise a cup or funnel 14 and a flexible tube or channel 15. The nozzle(s) 4 are mounted in a metal grid 5 which is oscillated by a linear pneumatic motor 8 and jointed linkage (9, Fig. 2) acting on an arm 6 carrying the grid 5. The nozzle(s) 16 is oscillated by a linear pneumatic motor driving a slidable rod (17, Fig. 2) acting on a slotted bracket 18- The nozzles may be oscillated at a frequency up to 2000 strokes/ min. through an amplitude of up to half the width of a trough. The positions of the trough 10, nozzle(s) 16, and trough 20 may be adjusted by clamps 13, 19 and 22 respectively and the nozzle(s) 4 may be placed in different positions on the grid 5. The first nozzle(s) 4 may be single or multiple orifice. The troughs 10, 20 may have U- or channel-shaped cross-sections and parallel or tapered sides. The liquids may be unsaturated polyesters which may be thixotropic. Each reservoir 1 may contain a polyester differing in colour to that in another. The moulds may be flat trays or polythene tubes so that rods or sheets suitable for being cut and machined into patterned polyester button blanks may be produced. A longer third trough may be placed below the trough 10 to carry liquid providing a background colour for the pattern produced on the trough 10.
