Abstract

1394560 Spot-type disc brakes SOC ANON DBA 4 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 46430/73 Heading F2E A disc brake comprises a disc 12, a fixed support 28, 44, a caliper 14 straddling the disc, being axially slidable on the fixed support and incorporating applying means for a first pad 16, and a second pad 18 mounted on the caliper 14, wherein the fixed support includes a first column 42 extending parallel to the disc axis and situated on the line of tangential stress to which each pad is subjected during brake application, and a second column 20 parallel to the axis, the pads being mounted about the first column 42 and the caliper sliding on the second column 20, the first pad also co-operating with the second column 20 so as to permit it to slide axially between the columns. As shown, a caliper 14, Fig. 4, has lugs 22 by which it is mounted on a fixed column 20 for sliding movement parallel to the axis of the disc 12. An inner brake pad 16, engaged by an hydraulically-operated piston, not shown, is supported by its backing plate 30, 34, on an extension 46 of fixed column 20 and on another fixed column 42 also for sliding movement parallel to the disc axis. An outer brake pad 18 has two studs 52 each accommodated in one of two holes 54 in a caliper leg 50 and is resiliently secured to the leg 50 by a tongue 58 welded to the backing plate 32, 36, and engaging a spring wire 56 whose ends are resiliently accommodated in the holes 54; the pad 18 is also mounted for sliding movement by engagement of its backing plate with fixed column 42. The side of the caliper remote from lugs 22 is supported on the backing plate extensions 34, 36, by a noise-reducing spring 62 whose central portion 64 engages notches 66 in the extensions and whose ends 68 are anchored in the caliper. The extensions 34, 36, each have a flat edge 60 nearer the axis of column 42 than is the disc periphery, so that after tilting of the caliper and rotation of the pads in their own plane through approximately 180 degrees from the Fig. 4 position, they can be removed by sliding off column 42 without the need for disc removal.
