Abstract
139,454. Davis-Bournonville Co., (Assignees of Bucknam, W. C.). Feb. 19, 1919, [Convention date]. Dividing by fusion.-In a gas cutting apparatus of the type in which the torch is mounted in a frame universally movable in a plane and moved in any desired path by a mechanically-driven tracer roller, the torch and tracer are in axial alinement perpendicular to the plane of movement. The torch 11 is carried by the lower bracket 9 of a yoke 8, 9, attached to an arm 6, which is knuclcle-jointed at 7 to a bracket-piece 6<a> on the end of an arm 4, which is pivotally mounted on a post 3 by means of a bracket-piece 5. On a platform 14 of the arm 6 is mounted an electric motor 13 with governor 37, the armature shaft of which has a worm meshing with a worm wheel 16 on a shaft carried by lugs 18 on the bracket 8. Worm gear 19, 20 and bevel gear 22, 23 rotate a sleeve 24 on a fixed shaft 25, which is screwed to the body 31 of an electro-magnet 32. The magnet core 29 is pinned to the sleeve 24 and its lower end is knurled to form a tracer roller which is held magnetically in contact with a templet 36 secured to the post 3. At the beginning of the cutting operation, the tracer is held in contact with the inclined edge 41 of a pivoted switch piece 38 engaging a stop pinion 40, and in rotating the tracer it rolls on the switch piece and then round the templet, and finally engages the brass or other non-magnetic backing 42 on the switch-piece, which is turned round into the position shown in dotted lines. The motor circuit may be controlled by a switch 45 or by a switch 46 on the torch connected with the valve for controlling the cutting oxygen.
