Abstract

761,454. Dividing by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1954 [Aug. 10, 1953], No. 22022/53. Class 83 (4). In apparatus for flame-cutting metal articles in which a cutting burner 26 is carried by a support allowing movement of the nozzle in any direction parallel to the workpiece surface in accordance with the movements of a manually guided tracer wheel 65, the support includes a post 10 rotatable about an axis normal to the workpiece surface and passing through the point of cut, a holding means 16 carried by the post 10 and adjustable to vary the angle between the burner axis and the workpiece surface and means for automatically rotating the post in accordance with and to the same extent as the rotation of a shaft carried by the axle of the tracer wheel, the means for rotating the post comprising a first gear-wheel rotating with the post, a second gear-wheel mounted on the shaft and a rack meshing with the gear wheels. The post 10 is mounted in a housing 7 attached to one end of a bar 1 and the tracer wheel 65 is mounted in a housing secured to the other end of the bar adjacent a housing 71 for a castor wheel 72, the bar 1 being slidable in a housing 2 mounted on a rail 4 for movement at right-angles to that of the bar 1. An electric motor 41 drives a tracer wheel spindle which through worm gearing rotates the tracer wheel and the gear-wheel secured to the hollow shaft coaxial with the spindle engages a rack 9B on a rod 9 which extends into the housing 7 where a further rack 9A thereon engages the identical gear-wheel keyed to the post 10. The post is vertically adjustable relatively to the gear-wheel by rotating a shaft 81 attached to a pinion in the housing 7 which engages a rack formed in the outer wall of the post. The burner, adjustable by a quadrant mounting, is supplied with cutting oxygen, preheat oxygen and fuel gas by hoses 29 supplied through passages in the post from further hoses 31. In operation the driven tracer wheel is guided over an outline drawing but in a modification a pointer or spot light mounted, e.g. on the castor housing is made to follow the outline.
