Abstract

1394289 Electro-mechanical filters LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 9 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 37220/72 Heading H3V An electromechanical filter comprises a set of intermediate bending mode resonators 2, and input and output resonators 1, 1<SP>1</SP> to which ceramic transducers 8 are attached, the resonators, which bend in the plane of the resonators as a whole, being interconnected at each of their end faces, with a pair of welded on nickel alloy coupling wires 3. The resonators may differ in length and/or cross sectional area. Respective coupling wires may be selected from different draw batches, so that the sum of their cross sections corresponds to a given value. A holder comprises a pair of projections 4 for each resonator, each stressed in torsion during use and possibly stamped or etched from an integral piece of sheet metal, Fig. 7 (not shown). The projections may each be flat, Fig. 5 (not shown), or an apertured flanged member Fig. 6 (not shown), dimension (L) having a given relation to the vibratory wavelength. The input and output resonators 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, to ensure the same resonance frequency as resonators 2, in spite of the effect of transducers 8, may be made of greater diameter than, or shorter than the remaining resonators, Fig. 9 (not shown), possibly with projections (9), Fig. 8 (not shown) to hold the coupling wires, or there may be a progressive change in resonator length, Fig. 10 (not shown). The resonators are glued, spot welded, or soldered to the holders, and are fine tuned by grinding their end faces. The coupling between adjacent resonators may change progressively, by varying resonator cross-section, or spacing l K . A housing 6 is provided. Design of a 50 KHz filter is discussed, Fig. 4 (not shown), displaying how the inter-resonator spacing (l k ) effects upper and lower band-edge, and middle frequencies, (# u ,# o ,# m ), (# r ) being the resonators' resonance frequency. Attenuation poles may be provided by coupling of non-adjacent resonators by further coupling elements. The filter may be a band-pass filter in a carrier frequency system.
