1394061 Spiral staircases C C R THURSTON 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46601/71 Heading E1B A step for a spiral staircase comprises a tread 8 a reinforcing member 14 and a plurality of portions 2, 3, 4 and 5, therebetween defining a region at one end of the tread through which a newel post of the staircase passes, at least two of the portions 4 and 5 being integral with cantilever arms for supporting the tread. The tread 8 has an annular member 11 integral therewith and this member together with a further annular member 12 confine the portions 2-5 and in the staircase are compressed by the newel post being tensioned. The elements are preferably made of wood but may be metal or plastics.
