Abstract

1393188 Step-by-step jacks SCHIESS AG 17 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 48351/73 Heading B8J [Also in Division E2] A step-by-step climbing jack comprises a traction element formed from a bunch 5 of lamellar strips 24, an upper clamping unit 3, a lower clamping unit 4 and a piston and cylinder unit 2. The upper clamping unit 3 is attached to piston 12 of the unit 2 while the lower clamping unit 4 is attached to cylinder bottom 9. Each of the clamping units 3, 4 has an opening through which the bunch 5 passes and across which extends a series of laminae 23 which alternate with the strips 24 of the bunch 5. Each clamping unit 3, 4 has a set of plate springs 30 acting through a piston head 27 and a piston 26 to urge a ram 25 against the laminae 23 to clamp the strips 24 of the bunch 5. Admission of hydraulic fluid though an inlet 32 relieves the clamping force alternately in the clamping units 3, 4 for conventional step-bystep operation of the jack by the piston and cylinder unit 2. The traction element 5 may be suspended from a support (7), Fig. 1 (not shown), by a clamping unit (6) similar to units 3, 4. Alternatively the clamping action between the laminae 23, 24 may be produced by wedge action, Fig. 7 (not shown). The individual strips 24 of the bunch 5 may be separately suspended on a support (35), Fig. 6 (not shown), through piston and cylinder units (36) interconnected to balance the tension in each strip 24.
