Abstract
1393058 Rotary engines POLLUTION CONTROL Inc 17 Sept 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 43520/73 Heading F1F A rotary internal combustion engine comprises an outer housing 14 and an inner housing 16 between which a coolant is circulated, the inner housing having an annular chamber 46 round which are movable three pistons, 44, equiangularly spaced around and carried by a disc 38 rotatable with a shaft 22 coaxial with the annular chamber 46, three plate valves 62 being movable between the solid and dotted line positions shown in Fig.1, into and out of the path of the pistons 44 through slots 66 formed in the walls of the inner housing 16, the valves 62 being equiangularly spaced round the chamber 46 so as intermittently to divide the chamber into three sections, an exhaust part (not shown), being spaced just rearwardly of each valve in the direction of rotation of the pistons and a fuel injection device spaced just forwardly of each valve, such that as the disc 38 rotates, the shaft 22 is driven by the expansion of fuel gases ignited in the three sectors of the chamber 46, further rotation causing the pistons to exhaust the spent gases from the exhaust ports. The fuel injected into the engine may be ignited by simultaneous injection of a suitable catalyst or by more conventional ignition devices. The shaft 22 is carried in bearings 24, 26, the right hand end of the shaft in Fig. 1 being the power take-off for the engine whilst the other end of the shaft 22 carries a pulley 32 driving a belt 34 for engine accessories, e.g. a starter motor and a water pump for circulation of coolant water through the space 20 between the inner and outer housings 16, 14 by way of a conduit 102. The remainder of the space inside the outer casing is oil filled the oil being circulated by a pump driven from a rod 98 actuated by a cam 94 on the shaft 22. A further cam 92 actuates a rod 96 controlling the injection of fuel into the engine. Each valve 62 is actuated in a timed sequence with engine rotation by a pin 82 moving round a cam track in a cam 90 in the shaft 22, the pin being carried by a yoke 74 pivotally connected by a pin 76 to the valve 62 which is itself pivotally mounted on a pin 70. Sealing rings (not shown) are provided round the periphery of the pistons 44, and the annular chamber 46 is sealed by a labyrinth seal 54 on the disc 38.
