Abstract
1386925 Rotary engines E H GREEN and E H GREEN Jnr 4 Sept 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 41493/73 Heading F1F A rotary internal combustion engine comprises a stationary engine body III, a rotary engine body II supported on a hollow shaft 57 of the stationary engine body by means of a bearing 45, the rotary engine body having four combustion chambers 25 formed therein each chamber 25 having therein a rectangular piston plate 1 secured on a shaft 2 rotatable in the rotary engine body, with the plates being movable between the extreme positions shown in Fig. 1 twice for each revolution of the rotary engine body, and each shaft 2 being linked by means of a crank 5 and pivoted links 3, 4 Fig. 5, to a planetary gear 6 which moves around a fixed main gear 59 carried on the hollow shaft 57 so that the movement of the plates 1 during the combustion-power cycle of the engine is converted to rotary motion of the rotary engine body II. Two main gears 59 are provided on the shaft 57 to co-operate with a pair of gears 6 for each piston plate 1 and the gearing is enclosed in a cover 23 which is oil-filled, the oil serving both as a lubricant and cooling medium and being fed in through an oil line 67 and returned through ports 68, 65 inside the hollow shaft 57. A clutch face 32 is carried by the cover 23 to serve as a power take-off, auxiliary power take-off being provided by a shaft 33, rotatable with the cover 23, passing through the hollow shaft 57 and carrying a pulley 34. A carbon seal 26 is provided between the edge of a housing 22 enclosing the combustion chambers 25, and a stationary disc 51 forming part of the stationary engine body III. Side and outer edge seals 11 are provided on the piston plates 1 which are also formed with lightening slots 7. Fuel intake and exhaust ports (not shown) are provided in the disc 51, which also carries cooling fins 78, and an ignition device or automatic gas by-pass ignition arrangement. The four cycles of the engine which take place during one revolution of the rotary engine body II are shown in Fig. 6 and comprise an intake cycle A during which the plates 1 move away from the shaft 57 and draw in fuel/air mixture through the intake port, a compression cycle B in which the plates 1 compress the mixture which is then ignited, a power stroke C wherein the expanding gases force the piston plates 1 away from the shaft 57 and finally an exhaust cycle D in which the burnt gases are expelled through the exhaust port.
